Link in bio (Instagram profile link)

Link in bio is the link you put on a social media profile like Instagram, the doorway that sends customers to booking, menus or your website.

Your social media profile is your shop window, and the profile link is the door right next to it.

A little more detail

Instagram post captions can't really hold clickable links, so customers tap the "link in bio" to go further. That makes this single link very important.

Services that gather multiple links in one place (Linktree and others) are popular. But if you build a link page on your own website, customers stay on your address and the visits are counted in your own analytics.

Add UTM tags to your profile link and you can count how many customers came from Instagram and how many of them booked.

Where should my Instagram profile link go?

It should take customers straight to the first thing they want to do after tapping it. Most businesses' customers want one of three things: booking, the menu or the location, so a page where they can pick one of these right away works better than your website's front page.

There are a few options for where to link. Pick one that fits your business, and it's fine to change it later.

When your situation changes, change where the link goes too. For example, point it to your sign-up page during an enrollment period and back to your link page the rest of the time, so a single profile link always sends customers to whatever matters most right now.

Whichever option you choose, it's best if the address in your profile rarely changes. With a link page inside your website, you can change the buttons while keeping the same profile address.

How do I make a link-in-bio page?

A few buttons and one line of business info are enough. Being easy to tap with a thumb on a phone matters more than fancy decoration.

It's a good idea to keep a contact button, such as phone or KakaoTalk, at the bottom of the page, even a small one. It's the last way out for customers who can't find what they want in the button list, so they can just ask.

If you put your logo or a signature photo at the top of the page, customers can tell right away that they've landed in the right place.

  1. 01Decide on the 2–3 main reasons customers tap your profile link. Example: booking, prices, directions.
  2. 02Make 3–5 buttons in that order, with the most important one at the top.
  3. 03Above the buttons, write your business name, hours and location in one line.
  4. 04Add UTM tags to the end of the address you put in your profile. Example: ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=profile
  5. 05After adding the link to your profile, tap it yourself on your phone and on someone else's.
  6. 06When an event or enrollment period ends, clean up the buttons, and check once a month for broken links.

What buttons should I put on my link-in-bio page?

Start with the questions customers ask most in DMs and turn them into buttons. If you get fewer DM questions, you picked the right buttons.

Cafes often use "See menu · Directions · Group order inquiries," and hair salons "Book now · Service prices · Meet our stylists." Craft studios do well with "This month's classes · Book a one-day class · Gift orders," and tutoring academies with "Request a consultation · Timetable · Info session dates."

Instead of "Go," write button labels that tell people what they'll get, like "See this week's open booking times." If two buttons go to the same place, merge them into one.

Also check that the page each button leads to looks good on a phone. If tapping a button opens a desktop-style table or a PDF file, customers get tired of zooming in and tend to leave.

Can I use the same link in Stories and on other social media?

Yes, you can use the same link page. Just give each social platform a different UTM source value so you can see where each visitor came from.

For example, set utm_source=instagram for Instagram, threads for Threads, youtube for YouTube, naver_blog for Naver Blog and kakao for your KakaoTalk Channel. Write the names down in a table and keep using the exact same spelling.

It's one address with different tags, so you don't have more pages to manage. A month later, you can compare in GA4 which social platform's visitors booked more.

Use Instagram Story link stickers the same way. Send short-lived news, like this week's open booking times, through a Story link, and if you give it a separate utm_content value such as story, you can compare whether more bookings come from your profile link or your Stories.

What are common profile link mistakes?

Once a profile link is set, people tend not to check it, so it often stays broken for months without anyone noticing. When a link doesn't open, customers don't tell you; they just quietly leave.

Often the link opens, but the text is tiny or the buttons are crammed together and hard to tap. Profile links are almost always opened on phones, so check them on a phone screen, not a computer.

Another common mistake is a mismatch between your bio and the link. If your bio says "Book via the link below," the booking button should be the first thing people see when they tap it.

If your link-in-bio service changes or your account has a problem, all the links you've set can break at once. For peace of mind, keep your key booking and contact links on your own website's address too.

  • An old event page still linked, showing an "event closed" screen
  • Ads or the logo from a link-in-bio service's free plan standing out more than your own business
  • More than 10 buttons, making the booking button hard to find
  • Changing your website address but updating only some of your social profile links
  • Linking without UTM tags, so you can't tell social media visitors apart from others

How do I track how well my profile link is working?

In GA4's Traffic acquisition report, look at Session source / medium to see visits from each social platform you tagged with UTM. If you set booking button clicks as a key event, you'll see not just visits but booking actions too.

You can also see profile activity numbers in Insights on an Instagram professional account. Link taps in Insights may not match visits in GA4 exactly; that's because they count differently, so focus on the trend.

When looking at the numbers, also check what share of visits led to a booking. If your profile link brings few visits but a high booking rate, it's doing its job; if it brings many visits but few bookings, it's time to revisit the button order and labels.

If you count clicks on each button as an event, you'll also see which buttons get tapped most. Drop the buttons that hardly get tapped and move the popular ones up.

For example

  • Hair salon's Instagram profile link → a page on its website with 3 buttons: "Booking · Prices · Directions."
  • Craft studio: link this month's class sign-up page in the bio, and switch to next month's page once sign-ups close.

Just check these

  • Your profile link opens right now (broken links are common)
  • Booking and contact buttons appear within 3 seconds of tapping the link
  • UTM tags let you count customers coming from social media
